Duties / Responsibilities of this position include:

In this role, one is a member of our executive group responsible for overall company guidance. The person in the CTO position is responsible for oversight of company activities related to current and developing technology. Specific duties and responsibilities include:

 

Establishing and maintaining a collaborative, creative environment encouraging rapid exchange as necessary, evaluation and implementation of ideas and technology:

  • Maximization of overall long-term, medium-term, and short-term financial benefit from the company’s global investment in Research and Development and technology overall.
  • Sufficient understanding of the company’s global technical activities to enable an appropriate assessment of the company’s organizational technical capabilities and the capabilities of its employees.
  • Management and mentoring of regional R&D Directors (United States, Europe, India, Singapore).
  • Willingness to engage in significant travel (approximately 25%), especially international travel to Europe and Asia in particular.
  • Rapid understanding and assessment of the merits and fit of potential technology acquisitions in whatever form they may take for the company.
  • Interaction with our executive group to provide guidance and understanding related to technical topics.
  • The ability to translate technical topics into terms that can be understood so that those with a non-technical background might have a practical understanding.
  • Oversight of our formal intellectual property activities (i.e., responsibility for the company’s patent portfolio).
  • Maintenance and continued development of a world class Research and Development operation relative to the size of the existing organization.
  • Guidance, direction, and leadership of R & D efforts to achieve the company Strategic Plan and Vision
  • Development of staff including mentoring and conducting performance reviews of personnel reporting directly to this position.
  • Development and maintenance of an active technical network including individuals from the academic and industrial community
  • Proactively meeting with customers on a global, regional, and local basis to understand needs for materials, products, and inventions.
  • Participation in strategic planning process to develop business plans.
  • Promotion of interdepartmental and international communication and cooperation (i.e., working closely with the sales and marketing organization and corporate development to ensure that appropriate projects are being worked on and that the pipeline of new ideas is active; working with manufacturing on process/product scale-up, and the understanding and removal of production problems)
  • Guidance and direction of research and development of key new products and processes related to global strategic initiatives.
  • Assurance that expectations and processes are established and followed with an appropriate degree of scientific rigor to control risk without slowing the development process while avoiding unnecessary bureaucracy
  • Providing technical support for existing products and processes when needed (e.g. ingredient changes in material compositions, production problems, etc.)
  • Ensuring that the regional R&D organizations are supported with equipment, personnel, and direction to satisfy company expectations of R&D.
  • Interaction with suppliers to analyze their technical capabilities as well as collecting product information to identify industry trends and potential customer needs.
  • Encouragement of collaboration among R&D Directors in local regions to develop and manage an efficient global organization to serve our global activities
  • Assure that intellectual Property is duly considered  (protection of innovations as well as right to practice)
  • Represent our company within the technical community (customers, suppliers, trade associations…)
  • Global responsibility for allocation of necessary resources for proper implementation and/or maintenance of environmental, health, and safety within R&D to provide a safe, clean and friendly work environment for R&D employees.
  • Working with product development (i.e. applications engineering), sales, and corporate development to understand what products might be of interest in the current and future business climate and provide guidance for creation of product definitions and subsequent products that will offer strong value propositions.
  • Awareness of new relevant technologies and proactive adoption of appropriate technologies.
  • Leading activity that is related to technology development that can be applied broadly to multiple materials or product families.
  • Leading appropriate global response to significant ingredient discontinuations.

 

Key Performance Indicators of this position include:
  • Successful development and commercial sale of products in our various regions.
  • Creation and protection of intellectual property that has the potential to have a beneficial financial impact for the company, regionally and globally.
  • Successful continuation of manufacturing of commercial products in the event of ingredient discontinuation.
  • Number of Material/Product/Processes Developed in the last 5 years.
  • Sales dollars resulting from Material/Product/Processes Developed in the last 5 years.
  • Attracting developing and retaining technical talent (employee turnover will be a measure)
  • Formal IP creation that has a direct link to commercially successful products.

The role is based near Detroit and they will relocate the right fit for their organization. It’s responsible for new product innovation on a global level, recommending new technology innovations, and managing technology development across 8 countries. It reports to the CEO of the company.

 

Job Requirements:
  • PhD in Polymer Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics or related field
  • 20+ years’ experience in product and technology development
  • 10+ years’ experience managing a large team with advanced technical, science, and engineering backgrounds with the focus on product commercialization from benchtop to launch
  • Experience supporting global operations highly preferred
